A Major Win for Badagry’s Maritime Future
A significant step towards transforming Badagry into a maritime, logistics and investment hub was reached yesterday in far away Copenhagen, Denmark.
The proposed Badagry Deep Seaport has taken a major step forward following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between APM Terminals and Badagry Port Development Limited to explore the development of the proposed deep seaport in Lagos.
The agreement was signed in Copenhagen, Denmark during the visit of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola CON led Federal Government delegation to Denmark.
The signing ceremony featured Mr Vincent Clerc, Group Chief Executive Officer of A.P. Moller–Maersk and Mr Didi Ndiomu, Managing Director of Badagry Port Development Limited who signed the MoU for the development of the Badagry Deep Seaport.

A Major Opportunity for Badagry
The proposed seaport will significantly strengthen Badagry’s position as a maritime, logistics, industrial and commercial gateway
Strategically located along the Lagos–Abidjan international trade corridor and close to the Republic of Benin, Badagry is uniquely positioned to connect Nigeria with the wider West African market.
This development will stimulate growth in logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, agro-processing, haulage, maritime services, real estate, hospitality and other supporting industries, creating new opportunities for businesses and young people.
The Badagry Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (BACCIMA) view this development as particularly significant.
BACCIMA, led by its President, Alhaji Yahaya Oladiran Idris has consistently advocated for greater economic attention to Badagry and the development of its strategic commercial potential.

Developments, Embassies, Multinational Institutions & Donor Agencies.
The Chamber has championed the positioning of Badagry not merely as a historic and cultural destination, but as an emerging investment, trade and economic hub.
This advocacy has included engagements, particularly the development of the Badagry Deep Sea Port, trade facilitation, infrastructure development, investment promotion, cross-border commerce and the broader “Invest in Badagry” vision.
The progress on the Deep Seaport reinforces the importance of this continued advocacy.
BACCIMA President, Yahaya, referenced to the Honourable Minister’s assurance during the Second Quarter 2026 Citizens/Stakeholders’ Engagement themed “From Policy to Action” at Eko Hotel, thanked the Honourable Minister, Dr Oyetola for his promise of the Federal government commitments to see to the development of Badagry Deep sea port and others.

The real opportunity is not only the construction of a seaport alone, but the economic ecosystem that can develop around it.
Badagry businesses must begin preparing to participate in the emerging opportunities by building capacity, formalising their operations, improving access to finance, adopting technology and developing products and services that can compete regionally and globally.
The Federal and Lagos State Governments, investors, host communities and the private sector must also work together to ensure that supporting infrastructure—including roads, rail, power, security and efficient trade processes—develops alongside the port.
A New Chapter for Badagry
The MoU between APM Terminals and Badagry Port Development Limited is an encouraging milestone in the long journey towards realising the Badagry Deep Seaport.
For Badagry, this is more than a port project. It represents the possibility of a new economic chapter—one that can create investment, jobs, businesses, exports and regional trade opportunities.
BACCIMA, under the leadership of Alhaji Yahaya Oladiran Idris, will continue to advocate for an inclusive development approach that ensures local businesses and communities are positioned to benefit from the opportunities that the project could bring.

Badagry has the location. The opportunity is emerging. Now is the time to prepare.
