ECOWAS Biometric ID Card Launch: A New Dawn for Cross-Border Trade along the Lagos-Abidjan Corridor

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) led by Kemi Nandap, pcc, mmis,fsmn,fspsp, today officially launched the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card, marking a major advancement in regional mobility, security, and economic integration within West Africa.

The landmark event was attended by high-level dignitaries, including:

• The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Represented by the Permanent Secretary
• The Honourable Minister of Interior, Hon Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo
• The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr Omar Alieu Touray
• Representative of Controller-General of Customs, Inspector -General of Police, Director of DSS, Chairman of EFCC
• Comptrollers-General and senior representatives of other security agencies.

Amongst the notable dignitaries at the event were, DCG Nnadi Dera, representing the Comptroller General Customs, AIG Zone 7, Mr Victor Olaiya representing the Inspector General of Police, Dr Tonny Element, who was the MC of the ocassion, Dr Willy Eselebor, a renowned expert on migration, Dr Cyriaque P. Agnekethom, Director, peace keeping and Regional Security, Seme – Border Immigration Command Controller amongst others.

Representing the private sector from ECOWAS Chambers, Amb. Aminou Akadiri, Executive Secretary of FEWACCI and from Badagry, the President of BACCIMA also National Vice President of NACCIMA, Alhaji Yahaya Oladiran Idris, and the Director General of BACCIMA, Engr. Seton Senu, FITD, reinforcing the Chamber’s commitment to promoting policies that enhance safe and seamless regional trade.

A Major Win for Cross-Border Traders

For thousands of traders who rely on the Seme–Krake corridor, the new biometric ID card brings long-awaited relief. It promises:

• Seamless movement across ECOWAS member states
• Reduced border delays and clearer procedures
• Lower incidents of extortion and illegal checkpoints
• Improved safety and digital identity protection

This initiative directly benefits SMEs, informal traders, and transport operators—the key drivers of commerce along the Lagos–Abidjan corridor.
